These vintage Mercedes-Benz G-Wagons celebrate fashion and… boom boxes
Just 20 will be made, and the retro looks will be paired with modern six-cylinder engines
It’s interesting when fashion brands team up with manufacturers. Take the ‘Project G-Class Past II Future’ for instance, which is a mash-up between Merc and the maker of audacious puffer jackets, Moncler.
Based on a G-Class from the ‘90s, Japanese musician and designer NIGO has also been involved, lending a hand in reworking various style elements - both inside and out - to give the old workhorse a fresh look. Unfortunately, that cabriolet is a one-off, so you'll need to settle for one of the newer hard tops pictured instead. Provided you can secure one of the 20 build slots in the first place, obviously.
The body gets a two-tone coat of olive green and grey before black and gold accents are applied in sections like the window frames, light metal alloys and bumper guards. NIGO has left the tailgate’s spare wheel and foldable windscreen untouched too, showing he is indeed a man of culture.
The good work continues inside, where a corresponding model number plaque occupies the centre console, the seats wear chequered upholstery and orange/gold accents have been pasted throughout. The restored wooden rear floor also gets a boom box thrown in. Yes, a boom box. Remember those, you cool cats?
Customers will get to choose between two six-pot engines from the current-generation G-Wag: the G450’s 385bhp mild-hybrid or the snarlier 445bhp one from the G500.
Speaking on the collaboration, NIGO said: “For me, the ‘90s were among the most influential decades from a cultural and creative standpoint. Electronic music and the hip-hop scene arose as a new expression of urban character. I wanted to integrate that vibe and energy into the design of the Project G-Class Past II Future by interpreting that legacy for a new contemporary era.”
No word on pricing, but we do know deliveries will begin in April 2025. We reckon it might be cheaper to get an old G350 and a wardrobe filled with puffer jackets instead, though.
