
It's official: TG readers reckon this is the best 90s Japanese sports car
You responded to our Question of the Week in droves, and surprisingly, the R34 Skyline and A80 Supra barely got a look in
We recently asked you lot which ‘90s Japanese gem would get your vote as the decade’s greatest sports car, and the results were - for the most part - pretty one-sided.
Before we get to the winner, let’s shed some light on the honourable mentions. The rotary-powered Mazda RX-7 was the second most popular vote, while various forms of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 traded blows for the third spot.
And while there was mention of the R34 Skyline and Toyota’s fourth-gen Supra - two of the titans from this period - they were left in the mud by the car which was both inspired by Ayrton Senna and took an almighty fight to the Europeans: the Honda NSX.
One comment in particular caught our attention, which was posted by ‘Peterson’ and reads: “NSX, without a doubt. Everyone else was trying to brute force the way with technology and gizmos, Mazda was trying to fit a square peg through a round hole, but Honda knew what to do - just build the purest car you can, give it a sonorous engine, don't faff about with pointless tech that adds weight and complexity. Get the basics dead right, the rest can be added later. If necessary.”
Well, it’s hard to argue against that.
