How good does the Radical SR3 look in Porsche’s best paint colour?

Over half of all Radicals leave the factory painted white. Turns out Rubystone is a really rather lovely alternative

Check out Radical racer Alex Bukhantsov’s brand-new SR3 XXR: is this gorgeous ruby colour not the prettiest you’ve ever seen? And yes, if you’re thinking it looks like something from a Porsche palette, you’re not far off. Rubystone Red and white wheels always was a winning combo.

Apparently over 50 per cent of Radical customers opt for white, because the general expectation is: decals, race, smash, repair. But Bukhantsov - the current Gulf Radical Cup championship title holder - had other ideas when he ordered his new SR3 XXR.

Radical tells us it offers a choice of seven colours for customers that want something a little different. Not that Bukhantsov wanted any of them. Oh no...

For the last several months, the Cambridgeshire-based operation has been flying out paint samples to Dubai to 'see first-hand how the colour looks in the sunshine', according to the race car maker. Sounding like something straight out of the Bentley Mulliner playbook, Bukhantsov eventually plumped for the unique raspberry shade.

Radical tells us the paintwork’s got special Shellac-like qualities to avoid chipping when under race pressure. Of course, those white wheels and racing strip add a certain je-ne-sais-quoi, too.

The SR3 features the typical Radical spaceframe chassis, 1.5-litre RPE engine and roofless design – the latter far better suited to the dry heat of Dubai, rather than the incessantly inclement climate of Blighty.

At the moment, it’s the only SR3 in this world with this magenta finish, but we can't imagine it'll stay that way for long. Radical says it’s going to make it available across its dealer network. Hurrah!
