Audi is now selling its old racing cars, beginning with the R18 e-tron and DTM RS 5

Both will be sold by the newly-formed 'Audi Sport Racing Legends' division

Audi Sport has created a new ‘Racing Legends’ division to sell off a bunch of its old racing cars, beginning with an RS 5 DTM and a R18 e-tron Quattro. Much want for both, we know.

The RS 5 - chassis 107 - tasted victory at the 2015 DTM season’s final race at Hockenheim, driven by two-time champ Timo Scheider, and is one of eight examples built that year for the official Works team.

It blends a full carbon body and monocoque with a steel roll cage, with power to the rear wheels provided by a 456bhp V8. Quite a few bits on this car were universal among DTM competitors at the time, including a six-speed semi-automatic paddle shift, carbon brakes and an active rear wing, which can be altered by up to 18 degrees for extra straight-line punch.

Then there’s the hugely successful R18 TDI - Audi's first hybrid to be entered into the WEC. The R18 won the drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles two years in a row (2012, 2013) and found Le Mans success in three consecutive seasons (2012 to 2014).

Chassis 207 won at Spa-Francorchamps in 2012, helped in part by a 3.7-litre V6 and a pair of 74kW hybrid generators. The outputs are 720bhp and 627lb ft sent to all four wheels... in a car weighing circa 900kg. Yeah, wild.

“We are rebuilding these chassis together with reconditioned parts from that time,” said Audi Sport’s managing director, Rolf Michl. “In some cases, even the developers from that era are involved in the current projects.”

The first of these two cars (we don’t yet know which one) will be delivered this summer, and Audi will follow up on its sale, and that of all other cars, with ‘comprehensive’ support thereafter. That means technical health checks and spare parts servicing, among other things, a bit like what Ferrari does with its Corsa Clienti program.

Which endurance racer do you reckon Audi should sell next?
