Mercedes reveals new limited-edition G-Class inspired by the 80s G-Wagen

How cool is a solid green or solid beige 4x4 Benz? Very. You want it

Not everything needs to be ported over from the 1980s, but Mercedes has happily revived one bit we don’t mind seeing: the colours and style of the classic W460-series Geländewagen brushed over the bones of the new G-Class.

It’s officially called the [deep breath and then shout] Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s. And while we have no idea why Merc feels the need to scream the moniker from the rooftops, it is quite cool.

You can have it as either a G450d (a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel with 362bhp), or as a G500 (again another 3.0-litre straight-six, but petrol, and 440bhp). Both pay tribute to that W460 via ‘agave green solid’ or ‘Colorado beige solid’ exterior paint, orange indicators, and a ‘night black magno’ finish for the grille, wheel arches and mirror housings. These really should be the only colourways available for the G-Class.

There are delightful W460-inspired five-spoke light alloy wheels, a ‘historic’ take on the Mercedes-Benz bonnet star, and a silver brand badge direct from the 80s plastered over the rear.

Mercedes has wrapped the centre panel of the black leather seats in a dove-grey fabric that was acceptable in the Eighties, while the door handles bear the really unnecessarily shouty ‘STRONGER THAN THE 1980s’ lettering. Other Easter eggs include reference to the Schöckl mountain – where the G was tested – both on the sill and as a badge. And there’s the all-important ‘1-of-460’ lettering.

Oh, that’s right, Mercedes is building just 460 of these special editions – because W460, geddit – and each one starts at £152,815. Wouldn’t have hurt to port over the 1980s price.
