Check out these futuristic Ford Mustang concepts designed by clever students

A shooting brake, a ute and a wild tandem hypercar were the three winners of Ford Design China’s latest competition

Want to know what the future of the Ford Mustang looks like? Well, the three concepts up above could give you some clue. In fact, all three were penned by the designers of the future too, because what you’re seeing here are the winners of a design contest hosted by Ford Design China and CDS Transportation Design School.

Ford called the competition ‘Mustang: A Grand Tour of Re-imagination’ and invited automotive design students from colleges and universities around the world to enter. We’re told that eight creations were picked to progress to the next stage in February, with those designers heading to Ford’s design centre in Shanghai.

During a week-long “immersive full-process design study” the students apparently received one-to-one guidance from Ford designers and transformed their sketches into 3D renders. Three winners were then selected, with those designs transformed into real-life models to be displayed at the Shanghai Auto Show.

First up is Liu Sizhuo from the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University. His design is the ‘Mustang Mach-S Concept’ shooting brake, which riffs off the idea of a Mustang Wagon that was first posed in the 1960s. This modern reincarnation looks rather good.

Second in our gallery above is the wonderfully weird ‘Mustang Super Utility Concept’ by Xie Yian from Pforzheim University in Germany. Essentially an all-electric Mustang Ute, this’d probably be one for the Australian market. Heck, the Mustang is already an electric crossover in Mach-E form, so why not a little pickup too?

The final design is the ‘Mustang Hyper Tandem Concept’ penned by Lai Yushun from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. It very much does what it says on the tin, turning the Mustang into a hypercar with a tandem 1+1 seating layout. At last, a proper competitor for the Czinger 21C. It’s what we’ve all been waiting for.

Go on then folks – if you had to pick one, which would it be?
