That's what RM Auctions reckoned and it was right, because the sale saw a new world record price achieved for the 1962 Ferrari 330 TRI/LM Testa Rossa, which won the 1962 Le Mans race with Phil Hill and Oliver Gendebien at the wheel.

Before the car was sold, Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer was on hand to give a few demonstration laps round the Fiorano track, which just goes to show that even at the world's priciest auctions, you should still insist on seeing the car being driven.

The 6.8 million Euro price - that's about £4.6 million in real money - makes the Testa Rossa one of the most expensive cars ever sold at auction.

It was closely followed by a 1953 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione that went under the hammer for 4.2 million Euros and a 512S that sold for 2.6 million Euros.

Felippe Massa's Formula One car that he first won a Grand Prix in went for 1.6 million Euros.

All of which makes the 506,000 Euros for a 288 GTO seem like a snip. Nearly.
